The Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC) is seeking student interns interested in public defense, criminal law, appellate practice, and/or public interest work for our summer Internship Program. GPDC provides zealous and client-centered legal representation to indigent persons charged with crimes. Client-centered representation means more than exceptional advocacy in the courtroom; it also involves recognizing the challenges clients face in meeting their fundamental needs.
Internships will be available beginning June 02, 2025, through July 25, 2025. The internships are part-time paid opportunities, with participating students earning $20 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. If you have access to external funding that can supplement your time, you may be eligible to work up to 40 hours per week.
Our interns do practical work and are not assigned anything that our attorneys do not also do themselves, such as court hearings, oral argument observations, client meetings, etc. The assignments given will depend upon the needs of the Circuit and Managing Attorneys.
Our practice is client focused. Our goal is to have our interns assist us in moving cases forward by reading and digesting transcripts, reviewing discovery, identifying appellate issues, drafting motions, drafting amended motions for new trials, drafting appellate briefs, investigating, interviewing, and corresponding with clients, watching oral arguments, participating and presenting case discussions, and any other necessity of the Attorneys.
As each student is assigned to participating circuits, each student is likely to have a different experience depending on the need of the client(s) they are assigned to represent.
Positions are limited and priority will be given to those students who have completed criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence, legal writing, and/or constitutional law, although these classes are not required. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school.
Interested applicants may contact Ms. Joy Walker, Senior Manager/Recruitment Manager, at 404-239-2083 ext. 8535 or joy.walker@gapublicdefender.org with any questions. A cover letter and resume should be submitted to Ms. Walker via email for consideration, no later than February 14, 2025. Please indicate which Judicial Circuit you are interested in serving.
