The Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office is seeking to fill an Assistant Public Defender I position to manage the misdemeanor caseload in Jones County. The selected candidate will represent indigent clients in Superior Court through all phases of criminal proceedings, including arraignment, pretrial hearings, trial preparation, plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing. The position may also serve as backup support for felony caseloads as needed. Applicants must demonstrate the qualifications and skills necessary to effectively perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. A strong commitment to indigent defense and client advocacy is essential. Applicants must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or be pending admission.

This role involves handling misdemeanor cases and assisting with cases of routine complexity, including all phases of criminal proceedings. The position requires the performance of professional legal work, including legal research, case preparation, client communication, and courtroom advocacy. The Assistant Public Defender I may also support more complex cases as needed and collaborate with other attorneys and staff. To be considered for this position, candidates must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited college or university and be licensed to practice law in the State of Georgia or be eligible to sit for the next Georgia Bar Examination. Performs other related duties as required.
