Job Title: Independent Contractor – Juvenile Defense Attorney

Location: Augusta area (Augusta, Georgia)
Job Type: Contract (1099 – Independent Contractor)

Position Summary

The Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC) is seeking an experienced juvenile defender in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia to handle  cases in the Augusta area. This contract position may be structured to handle solely juvenile cases or a combination of juvenile and Superior Court matters.

The Independent Contractor Juvenile Defense Attorney provides legal representation to minors involved in the juvenile justice system, ensuring the protection of clients’ legal rights and advocating for outcomes focused on rehabilitation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide zealous legal representation to juvenile clients in court proceedings, including detention hearings, adjudications, and disposition hearings
  • Handle cases as assigned within the Augusta area
  • Prepare and manage cases, including legal research, drafting motions, and case strategy development
  • Advise clients and their families on legal rights, case status, and potential outcomes
  • Appear in juvenile and, if applicable, Superior Court, and negotiate with prosecutors for favorable resolutions
  • Collaborate with court personnel, social workers, probation officers, and community stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate case files, documentation, and compliance with court requirements
  • Advocate for alternatives to detention, including diversion programs and rehabilitative services
  • Manage an assigned caseload efficiently and meet all court deadlines

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia
  • Experience in criminal defense and/or juvenile law required
  • Strong courtroom advocacy and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines independently
  • Knowledge of Georgia juvenile and Superior Court procedures and applicable laws
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially when working with youth and families

Preferred Experience

  • Prior experience handling juvenile delinquency or conflict defense cases
  • Familiarity with the Augusta Judicial Circuit and local court systems
  • Experience working with indigent or at-risk populations

Work Schedule & Structure

  • Contract position; schedule based on court calendar and caseload needs
  • Expected availability for court appearances and client meetings (typically weekdays)
  • May require on-site presence at juvenile and Superior Court facilities in the Augusta area
  • Contractors must have the ability to work independently and manage their schedule while meeting deadlines and professional obligations.

Compensation

  • Compensation based on contract structure

  • This is a non-benefited, independent contractor position
  • Attorneys are responsible for their own taxes, insurance, and professional expenses
  • Must maintain confidentiality and adhere to all ethical standards of legal practice
