Independent Contract Attorney- West Georgia/Coweta Judicial Circuit

**Compensation:** $100,000 annually

**Organization:** Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC)

Position Overview:

The Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC) is seeking an experienced Independent Contract Attorney capable of handling serious cases in the West Georgia and Coweta Judicial Circuits. Contractor must be in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia and able to represent 100 clients over the course of a year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive legal defense for clients.
  • Manage all stages of criminal proceedings including arraignment, discovery, motions, plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing.
  • Conduct legal research, draft motions, and represent clients effectively in court.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with GPDC and legal requirements.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, ensuring that they are informed and involved in their defense.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
  • Demonstrated trial experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Georgia criminal law and procedure.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage a demanding caseload while maintaining a high standard of client representation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with or within the Georgia Public Defender system.
  • Familiarity with the courts and judicial personnel in the West GA and Coweta Judicial Circuit.

Additional Information:

This is a contract position and not an employee role; benefits are not provided.
The contractor must provide their own malpractice insurance.
Contractor must have the ability to work independently and manage their schedule while meeting deadlines and professional obligations.
