Independent Contractor Attorney- Cordele Judicial Circuit

Position Overview:

The Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC) is seeking experienced Criminal Defense Attorneys or firms to serve as Independent Contractors within the Cordele Judicial Circuit. This role is ideal for attorneys with a strong litigation background and commitment to client-centered representation who desire flexibility and autonomy while making a tangible impact in the criminal justice system.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive legal defense for clients charged with felony offenses.
  • Manage all stages of criminal proceedings including arraignment, discovery, motions, plea negotiations, trial, and sentencing.
  • Conduct legal research, draft motions, and represent clients effectively in court.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with GPDC and legal requirements.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, ensuring that they are informed and involved in their defense.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in criminal defense, with a significant portion handling felony matters.
  • Demonstrated trial experience in felony criminal cases.
  • Strong knowledge of Georgia criminal law and procedure.
  • Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage a demanding caseload while maintaining a high standard of client representation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with or within the Georgia Public Defender system.
  • Familiarity with the courts and judicial personnel in the Cordele Judicial Circuit.
  • Prior experience as a contract or panel attorney.

Additional Information:

This is a contract position and not an employee role; benefits are not provided.
The contractor must provide their own malpractice insurance.
Contractor must have the ability to work independently and manage their schedule while meeting deadlines and professional obligations.
