West Georgia Judicial Circuit – Circuit Public Defender


The new West Georgia Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office is seeking to hire a Circuit Public Defender. The primary responsibilities include serving as the Circuit Office head, reporting to the Executive Director of the Georgia Public Defender Council, and making key decisions regarding the management of the Circuit, its budget, its staff, and its cases. Applicants for the position of Circuit Public Defender should possess a strong and demonstrable interest in the effective client-centered defense of indigent people accused of crimes, leadership skills, and the ability to oversee the management of a Circuit Public Defender office.

Note: This position will serve in the new West Georgia Judicial Circuit (effective Jan. 1, 2025) encompassing Carroll and Heard counties. Refer to SB 424 for additional information regarding the new West Georgia Circuit.

Description of Duties: Supervising and managing administration, budgeting, and operation of indigent defense across the circuit. Supervising and mentoring Assistant Public Defenders, investigators, paraprofessionals, clerical assistants, and independent contractors. Establishing a method for identifying conflicts of interest at the earliest possible opportunity. Performs other related duties as required.
