The Georgia Capital Defender’s Office in Atlanta, Georgia, is seeking to hire a Fact Investigator. This position will cover a geographic area North of I-20 with a focus on Metro Atlanta and will require frequent overnight travel throughout the State and country as needed. The Fact Investigator performs routine investigative work and conducts investigations to include assisting in interviewing witnesses, complainants, and/or law enforcement officials, serving subpoenas, and preparing reports of findings in preparation for cases. This position works with attorneys representing indigent defendants in state capital cases at the pre-trial and trial level. The Fact Investigator works with attorneys and mitigation investigators as part of a client team and is primarily responsible for investigating the facts of a case regarding the Guilty/Not Guilty phase of capital cases. The Fact Investigator reviews discovery, identifies, locates, and interviews a variety of witnesses; identifies, collects, and reviews a vast array of records, identifies and analyzes issues in the case; prepares independent reports and memos on the cease, and assists attorneys in identifying appropriate expert witnesses and preparing evidence and witnesses to present to a judge and/or jury. The Fact Investigator must be able to organize and prioritize workload to manage cases efficiently, adjust to workload changes, work within a team, and under stress to meet guidelines. Must be willing to travel extensively throughout Georgia and out of state.
