Augusta Judicial Circuit – Assistant Public Defender III


The Augusta Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office is seeking to hire an Assistant Public Defender III.  The primary duties include managing staff attorneys, administrative staff, and representing indigent clients with criminal case(s) in Superior Court felonies, sometimes Juvenile Court delinquencies.  Applicants must meet the qualifications and have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities for the position.  This Assistant Public Defender will be responsible for preparing and presenting cases for trial and entering pleas, conducting legal research, preparing and presenting complex documents, pleading compilation, orders, etc.  This position will advise and counsel other attorneys as to the case management practices of handling their assigned cases.  This Assistant Public Defender must demonstrate a mastery of litigation and possess extensive jury trial experience as the lead counsel in felony cases.  In addition, the applicant must be a member in good standing or eligible for admission to the State Bar of Georgia.

Description of Duties:  The Assistant Public Defender III will be responsible for providing competent and zealous legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients.  An individual holding this position should be prepared to direct subordinate staff engaged in criminal defense, advise and counsel other attorneys as to the case management practices of handling their assigned cases; represent clients in cases including the most serious, legal complex, high-profile and/or significant cases assigned to the office.  Other duties may be required and assigned.
