The Gwinnett County Mental Health Court (MHC) is a treatment and accountability court within the Superior Court that seeks to intervene in the criminal justice system for mentally ill people to help them become healthy and law abiding citizens by connecting them to community-based resources for treatment, recovery, and stability. participants can enter the court on a pre or post adjudication status.

The MHC Judge in Gwinnett County is Judge Karen Byers. In addition to the judge, the MHC Team consists of the following members:

  • Defense Attorney
  • District Attorney
  • MHC Court Coordinator/MHC Court Case Manager
  • Treatment Provider (Viewpoint Heath and Corizon)
  • Surveillance Officer
  • Probation Services

The MHC tem members meet regularly to familiarize themselves with the participant's progress and set-backs in order to prepare for each court session.

MHC is a four-phase intervention program for adults who have been accused of a crime(s) in Gwinnett County and who are having difficulty maintaining their mental well-being. MHC involves weekly court appearances, random drug testing, as wellas group and individual counseling. MHC awards incentives for compliant behavior and imposes sanctions for undesirable behavior. Participants who do not comply witht he rules may be placed in short-term custody, moved back to the previous phase of MHC, and/or a variety of other sanctions. Participants may also be terminated from MHC. Graduating from the Gwinnett County Mental Health Court is called entering into "Phase Life."

The Gwinnett MHC focuses on helping clients maintain their basic needs including medication compliance, work, housing, childcare, and money management. Each client's treatment plan is specifically individualized to meet their specific needs.
