Position: Extern/Intern - Central Office Appellate Division

Location: GPDC Central Appellate Division

The Appellate Division of the Georgia Public Defender Council is providing opportunities for motivated law students to gain hands-on experience representing indigent defendants on criminal appeals.

Interns and externs will partner with experienced appellate attorneys to review trial court records, analyze legal issues, draft pleadings, and attend court proceedings in actual criminal cases from the motion to new trial level through direct appeal. There might also be an opportunity to participate in court proceedings under the Student Practice Act. Students will also observe oral arguments first-hand in the state’s highest court, the Supreme Court of Georgia.

The Central Appellate Division office is located in the heart of downtown Atlanta in the State Bar of Georgia Headquarters, just minutes from CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park.

The Appellate Division is recruiting at all levels (1Ls to 3Ls, graduates, experienced professionals who want to try something new) and accepts applicants with a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. While a criminal law background is not a prerequisite, applicants who have taken evidence, criminal law, or constitutional law classes are preferred.

Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter to:
