Position: Extern or Intern - Office of the Appellate Defender

Location: Office of the Appellate Defender (Atlanta)

The Office of the Appellate Defender offers the opportunity for motivated law students to gain hands-on experience representing indigent criminal defendants on appeal.

Interns and externs will partner with experienced appellate attorneys to review trial court records, analyze legal issues, draft motions and briefs, and attend court proceedings. Eligible interns and externs may also have opportunities to participate in court proceedings under the Georgia Supreme Court Rules 91–95 and may observe oral arguments first-hand in the Supreme Court of Georgia.

The Atlanta Office of the Appellate Defender is located in the heart of downtown Atlanta in the State Bar of Georgia Headquarters, just minutes from CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park.

The Appellate Defender is recruiting at all levels (1Ls to 3Ls, graduates, and even experienced professionals) and accepts applicants with a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. While a background in criminal law is not a prerequisite, applicants with coursework in evidence, criminal procedure, and constitutional law are preferred.
