2017 SUMMER INTERNSHIP

Location: Augusta Judicial Circuit

The Office of the Public Defender, Augusta Judicial Circuit, located in Augusta, GA will host law student interns during the summer of 2017. This internship program is designed to introduce promising students to the practice of criminal law and the honor of indigent defense. Interns will gain first-hand experience in criminal defense and client representation by: observing every aspect of criminal court proceedings for felony cases; participating in trial preparation and strategy meetings with trial attorneys; participating in bond hearings; and completing general legal research projects. Interns will directly interact with attorneys, support staff, and clients. Our office is located in downtown Augusta, GA within walking distance of the Richmond County courthouse.

The internship will begin in late May and conclude by August. Start and end dates are negotiable. Interns must be entering the 2L or 3L year. Accepted interns must provide their own accommodations in or within commuting distance of Augusta. The internship is unpaid. Accepted interns are encouraged to seek their own grant funding for pro bono student positions assisting non-profit law entities. Our office will also work with schools if the intern is able to receive class credit for the summer.

Student applicants will be considered on a rolling basis through the month of April with interviews and invitations to participate in the intern program ongoing.
