Providing zealous, effective, ethical representation

to indigent people accused of crimes.

The Georgia Public Defender Council (GPDC) has an IMMEDIATE need for two private practice contract attorneys to accept the regular assignment of a substantial number of indigent defense cases in the Cordele Judicial Circuit. The ideal candidates would be experienced criminal defense lawyers with long term plans to remain in private practice. The attorneys would be available to accept new clients in the Circuit throughout the year and to either have, or be willing to establish, a local office; ideally in the Cordele Circuit. The two candidates must be from or establish separate law firms. While these are contract positions and the candidates would be free and encouraged to maintain a private law practice outside of the contract obligations, it is important that the candidates not overwhelm themselves with an amount of other business that would prevent them from effectively representing the clients assigned under contract by GPDC.

One of these attorneys would likely serve as the primary conflict defender option in the Superior Court for the circuit whereas the second attorney would likely serve as the secondary option in said Court, thus there would likely be a caseload differential between the two attorneys, however, this structure is subject to discussion depending on the candidates. The pay and specific terms of the contract arrangements are negotiable.

All interested candidates should send a letter of interest and resume to the attention of Jim Stokes, Director, State Level Services for GPDC at This email address is being protected from spambots.
