Job Description and Requirements:

Assistant Public Defender I

Assistant Public Defender II

The Augusta Law Office of the Public Defender is seeking to hire an Assistant Public Defender for its misdemeanor division. This attorney would primarily handle misdemeanors and ordinance violations in the State and Magistrate Courts of Richmond County, Georgia. Misdemeanor division attorneys typically transition into felony practice after a year to two years with our office. This position will be filled as an APD I, II, or III, depending on the candidate's experience.

The Augusta Law Office of the Public Defender is a Gideon’s Promise partner office and the third largest public defender’s office in Georgia with approximately 34 attorneys, 7 investigators, and 16 support staff. The attorneys and staff occupy a completely renovated historic building located in downtown Augusta, which includes a mock courtroom for training and trial preparation. By becoming a member of this office, you will be a part of a team that is dedicated to providing superior client-centered representation. In addition, you will have the opportunity to attend multiple in-office CLE seminars and training to enhance your litigation skills, evidence practice, and legal writing.

Ideal candidates will be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia (or eligible to immediately waive into the Bar). However, recent law school graduates who are currently awaiting bar results are encouraged to apply. Additionally, all applicants should exhibit a passion for serving the underserved in the community. Please explain in your cover letter why you want to work as a public defender and describe in detail any volunteer work, internships, or paid positions that reflect your commitment to public defense.
