Investigator I 

The Augusta Judicial Circuit is hiring an Investigator I. This position is open until filled, and its salary is sommensurate with the candidate's experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Plan and conduct investigations in defense of clients charged with criminal offenses, including client interviews, evidence analysis, scene investigation, witness location and interviews, records collection, background checks. Work cooperatively with attorneys to develop strong client relationships, defense theories, and evidence in support thereof.  Prepare reports of interviews and developments in case investigation.  Provide support to clients in need of social services assistance. This is a non-supervisory position. The Investigator receives general supervision from the Chief Criminal Investigator and the attorneys with whom the investigator works.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Intelligent, motivated, energetic and fearless individual who believes in the presumption of innocence, cares about protecting the constitutional rights enumerated in the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments to the United States Constitution, and has a professional desire to serve underprivileged individuals.  In addition to these attributes, applicants must also have a valid driver's license and at least a high school diploma.  

POST certification and the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program certification are not required, as this is a public defender position.

STRONGLY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Proficiency in Spanish; Bachelor's degree; experience working with the poor; prior experience working in a public defender office or as a defense investigator; background in journalism or media reporting; familiarity with the Augusta Judicial Circuit (Richmond County, Burke County, and Columbia County).
