The Clayton Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office is expanding and seeking to add additional Assistant Public Defender positions! This position is for an APD III or IV, and will be filled at the appropriate level based on experience.

Primary duties include representing indigent clients with criminal cases in Clayton County Superior Court. Candidates must have acquired a Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university and must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia. Candidates must also have the necessary skills to perform the job duties and responsibilities for the position. 

Assistant Public Defenders are expected to be able to effectively prepare cases for trial, zealously advocate and defend their client, seek and negotiate plea disposition and enter pleas in felony cases in Superior Court.  

The chosen candidate will also be responsible for maintaining a challenging caseload, remaining current on emerging law, drafting legal briefs, assisting as necessary with appeals on their cases, and participating in office trainings.  Candidates for this position will also supervise junior attorneys by second seating trials, being a resource on legal issues, and helping develop plea strategies. Being bilingual is an asset, but is not required.

Emphasis will be placed upon candidates' demonstrated commitment to indigent defense. At a minimum, two years of experience practicing in the area of criminal law is required for this position. Preference will be given to candidates who have five or more years of experience in criminal law, and specifically in criminal defense.
